A MAN who drunkenly broke into a Keith supermarket using a mechanical digger was jailed today for nearly two years.

Duncan Elrick has also been banned from driving for a decade after appearing in the dock at Elgin Sheriff Court.

The 35-year-old caused thousands of pounds of damage to the Spar branch on Regent Street after he stole a Volvo Excavator during the early hours of January 19.

He used its mechanical arm to smash down the storefront and then took several bottles of alcohol from inside.

He also damaged an ATM in an attempt to steal cash.

Elrick was arrested later that same morning after he returned to the crime scene.

Elrick, whose address was given in court papers as Inverness Prison, was already banned from driving when he committed the crimes.

In addition, he was already on bail having appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court on a separate matter just 11 days beforehand.

He was jailed for four months and received the ban after he admitted driving the digger.

He also received a further 528 days in prison for three charges relating to theft, attempted theft and reckless driving.

The Spar was forced to remain shut for several days while the extensive damage was repaired.
