THE long-term survival of Keith Sports and Community Centre has been boosted by the success of a new membership scheme introduced by Moray Council.

The Fit Life? scheme has seen a big rise in the number of people using council-run sport and leisure facilities.

Faced with falling usage figures, the council launched the scheme in January, offering individuals and families cut-price access to a wide range of facilities.

Since then 547 individual and 764 family memberships have been taken out across Moray. In Keith there are 185 individual and 237 family members, making a total of 422.

A Moray Council spokesman said: "Clearly we can’t prove that these increases are down solely to the Fit Life? membership scheme but we know there is anecdotal evidence that people who have taken out membership want to get the full benefit and plan on making good use of the facilities.

Keith mum Linda Gordon (46) and sons Ben (11) and Tom Palmer (8), both pupils at St Thomas’ Primary, are now regular users of the town’s pool.

Ken Brown, sport and leisure manager, added: "We have noticed all our classes, whether it is fitness, pool-based or public sessions, being busier. It has been a great success."
