HOUSEHOLDERS in the Huntly area have been urged to stay alert when it comes to home security with lighter nights and better weather on the horizon.

The police are urging people not to leave doors and windows open.

With the summer weather more people will be spending time outdoors, and the temptation will be to leave doors and windows open.

However, the police have warned this provides a ready invitation to passing opportunist thieves who can sneak in and out in a matter of seconds, taking valuable property with them.

The reminder comes as figures show that instances of housebreaking and attempted house breaking have fallen 34.4% from 974 crimes in 2013/14 to 639 crimes in 2014/15. Break-ins to homes have dropped by 42.3% from 2103/14 to 2014/15 with 261 crimes being recorded this year against 452 last.

Housebreaking in Aberdeenshire, itself, across the same period is down 39%.

Crimes of all dishonesty across Aberdeenshire and Moray have shown a 25.1% decrease.

Superintendent George MacDonald said: "While these figures clearly show a marked reduction in crimes of dishonesty in Aberdeenshire and Moray, we want homeowners and members of the community to make sure that their properties are secure and not provide an open invitation to thieves.

"As we move into the summer nights and the enjoyment that the better weather brings, we’d encourage people not to leave doors and windows open if they’re out of view.

"Home security is vital and that follows for any garages, sheds and outbuildings. Given the valuable property that is stored in a typical family dwelling these days, it is vital that home owners take the security of outbuildings as seriously as their homes."

"Only open windows of the room you are in and do not leave valuables in clear view, or easy to reach places.

"Also, please be a good neighbour, particularly towards older or vulnerable residents. Ask them if they require any assistance to make their homes safer and keep an eye out for them, as well as anyone coming to their door."

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity in their community, or who has any information that could assist Police Scotland should call 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
