The Insch Renewable Energy Consortium (IREC) is one of five projects to benefit from more than £20 million allocated by the Local Energy Challenge Fund.

The award, a grant of £4.5 million and loan of £1.5 million, towards their Energyzing Insch Project, was announced by the Scottish Energy Minister, Fergus Ewing, at the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) conference organised by Local Energy Scotland.

Alasdair McCallum, chairman of the group described the announcement as a "real boost to the infrastructure of the village".

Mr McCallum said: "A really able team has put a tremendous effort into working up the proposal and submitting the application. The success of the bid is a real testament to their knowledge, expertise and the dedication they have put into the scheme to get us to where we are today."

Mr Ewing said: "The Scottish Government is defining a distinctive approach to Scotland’s future energy provision, putting communities at the heart of decisions about their local energy system and empowering them to take an economic stake in new developments."

IREC had previously been awarded nearly £30,000 in phase 1 of the Local Energy Challenge Fund to research the feasibility of their proposal.
