HUNTLY Rotary is spearheading a drive to promote purple ice cream to raise money to help eradicate polio.
The purple ice cream made by Rizza’s had its public launch at the 1010 district conference in Aberdeen and in just three months’ time, it will be served up to MSPs at Holyrood.
It is also hoped the ice cream will be sampled by MPs at Westminster.
Rotary’s Purple4Polio campaign, which has involved local Rotarians planting and selling bulbs for purple crocuses, was launched as a final effort to try and eradicate the disease.
The colour reflects the shade of the dye used on the fingers of children around the world to show they have been immunised.
The ice cream idea took off after Rotary club secretary Paul Robinson put the suggestion to club member and Rizza’s director Philip Morrison. The concept was explored further and endorsed by the Rotary hierarchy..
It is now listed and available in all of Rizza’s outlets across the north and central areas of Scotland. In a deal brokered between Rizza’s and Rotary, every 125ml tub sold will pay for one child to be immunised. The larger container will pay for three children to be protected against polio.
By the end of February 2017, the ice cream will be available to the rest of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland through Rizza’s distributors.
