STOCKS at the Huntly Foodbank were topped up when Dennis Robertson MSP visited Tesco to make a donation to the sixth neighbourhood food collection.
The collection, which has gone directly to the store in Huntly was organised in conjunction with the Trussell Trust and Fare Share and Tesco topped up the donations made by a further 30 per cent.
Huntly Foodbank co-ordinator Debbie Parry and volunteers were at the store to help advise shoppers on what items would be most appreciated.
Ms Parry said: “It was a good opportunity to share information and engage with those who are interested about the work we do and we appreciate the donation from Dennis Robertson.
“We continue to be busy at the foodbank meeting the needs of local folk in crisis and were very glad of the collection to replace stock. Thanks to the efforts of customers, staff and volunteers we collected 824 kilos of food over the weekend, which was just amazing.
A recent report from the Trussell Trust showed that there had been a 65 per cent increase in the food parcels which they distributed last year, as compared to the previous year, with the number of people reliant on foodbanks expected to pass the one million mark across the UK.
Mr Robertson said: “The continued rise in the use of foodbanks is shameful and demonstrates the willful damage being caused by the Tory austerity agenda to communities across Scotland and the UK as a whole."
“I was particularly concerned to hear that a large number of those using the Huntly Foodbank were the working poor.
“I commend Tesco for their continuing dedication to this particular cause and I would encourage those who can to make a donation to help those in need.”
Trevor Morrison, store manager for Tesco in Huntly, added: “We were obviously delighted to be involved with such a fantastic initiative that directly benefits our local community."
