HERE at The Huntly Express, we are delighted to announce that we have our first contender for the gift of a baby blanket from the Networks of Wellbeing craft group.

The baby, a wee girl, was born on Saturday January 9 at 4.03pm and is home in Huntly with her mum and dad. If you know of a baby born to a family in the AB54 area before this time then let us know as soon as you can on 01466 793622 .

A special gift hand-made by members of the Huntly craft group is waiting for the first baby born in the AB54 area.

The white blanket, from squares knitted by members of the Networks of Wellbeing (NoW) craft group is to be gifted to 2016’s first arrival.

To be considered as recipient of the blanket, parents of babies born in the early days of the year are asked to contact either The Huntly Express or NoW with details of their baby’s birth, with verification from the birth certificate. The AB54 area was chosen by NoW as it is the immediate area around Huntly and is the name of a quarterly publication by the group.

Kirsty Gall, project worker at NoW, said: "While there was a maternity unit in Huntly, there was a tradition for the first baby born there to receive a layette from a local organisation, our members wanted to revive something similar.

"Ladies in the craft group started knitting the blanket in September to have it ready for the first baby but with mums from the area now having their babies in Elgin, Aberdeen or at home, we were unsure how to reach the family. Thanks to The Huntly Express we are able to try to identify the baby and ensure it receives the blanket."

The gift is the perfect size for a pram or cot. The knitting shop in Duke Street, Pins and Needles, supported the ladies’ venture by ensuring they had ample stock of the right wool.

A number of extra squares remained after the blanket had been sewn and the ladies are considering continuing with their knitting to provide a blanket for the neo-natal unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.

Mums and dads who think their new arrival might be the first in the area should contact Networks of Wellbeing on 01466 793732 and speak to Kirsty or The Huntly Express on 01466 793622 or by email to mail@huntlyexpress.co.uk including a contact telephone number.
