AN ELDERLY motorist died following a collision on the A96 on Friday night.

Police Scotland confirmed that an 87-year-old man died following a two vehicle collision on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverurie Road at its junction with the B979, known as the Tyrebagger.

The collision occurred at 7.10pm on Friday.

The 87-year-old man was the driver of a blue Hyundai i30. The 61-year-old female driver of a red Mini Cooper was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow for collision investigation.

Sergeant Rob Warnock said: "My thoughts are with his friends and family at this tragic time.

"We would also like to speak to any drivers who may have seen the incident or the immediate aftermath, including a lorry driver who passed the scene.

"They may have information which could help our investigation and I would appeal for them to contact us. If you have any information, please contact Police Scotland on 101."
