AN unprecedented show of public support has followed the news that Huntly GP, Dr Gordon Carter, is next week to face the Fitness to Practise Panel of the General Medical Council.

The panel will meet in Manchester to consider an allegation of misconduct by Dr Carter.

Louise Scott, who has been a patient of Dr Carter for most of her life, launched the Facebook page ‘Supporters of Dr Gordon Carter’ on Sunday evening and overnight it was joined by around 300 people.

On the page, members speak openly of their gratitude to Dr Carter. Several say that his diagnostic skills and prompt response saved their or a member of their family’s life.

Ms Scott has been overwhelmed by the response from the community and said: "The reaction from local people to the possibility that Dr Carter might no longer be part of the GP practice and the wider community in Huntly has been staggering."

A petition in support of Dr Carter states: "The town of Huntly will be left short of a skilled GP who understands the needs and complexities of life in a remote rural area and who serves his patients and the community to the highest standard."

The misconduct hearing will investigate the allegation that Dr Carter engaged in a relationship with a patient.
