North Region Speechmaking – “On Opposite sides of the Road”

The North Region of the Scottish Young Farmers held its annual Junior Speechmaking and Junior Quiz eliminations at Nairn Community Centre, Nairn.

Six speechmaking teams competed, covering a wide range topics, which were judged by Sandra MacIver, Rosie Ferguson and Gordon Ferguson, themselves all having taken part in speechmaking previously for Forres Young Farmers.

The winning team was Sandwick A, with team comprising of chairman, Amy Neil, opposer, Cody Chalmers and proposer Joe Sinclair who discussed the topic ‘On opposite sides of the road’ scoring 78.2 out of a possible 100.

Second place went to Udny with 78 points for team members, chairman, Gemma Stuart, opposer, Megan Milne and proposer, Lorna Black with speech titled ‘Bargain Buyer or Designer Diva’.

Megan also was awarded the prize for best opposer outwith the winning team.

In third place were the team from Forss Young Farmers Club comprising of Amy Mill in the chair, Rhianna MacKay as opposer and Faye MacKay as proposer of their speech titled ‘Twintastic’ with a score of 77.5.

Faye also won the prize for best proposer outwith the winning team with Chloe Wood of the Harray Purple team winning the title of best chairman outwith the winning team.

The other teams taking part were Harray Green, Harray Purple, and Sandwick B.

The Judges commented that the standard of competition was exceptionally high and that all competitors deserved to be taking part on the day.

While the judges retired to make their difficult decisions, Junior Quiz teams battled it out on the buzzers for two places at the National Quiz finals. The winning team representing East Aberdeenshire was Udny JAC, Lorna Black, Ryan Cumming and Megan Milne and second place was the team from Orkney District, Cody Chalmers, Robbie Hewison and Campbell Ridland.

In third place was the Caithness team from Forss Young Farmers comprising of Amy Mill, Rhianna MacKay and Faye MacKay.

The top three speechmaking teams and top two quiz teams will go forward to the National Finals in Gogarburn, Edinburgh on December 7.

North Chairman Gemma Bruce commented: “It was great to see so many juniors taking part in the speechmaking competition at such a high standard and wish the winning teams well for going on to represent the North Region at the finals”.
