A family-run butchers has been given national recognition at the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards.

Ewan Morrice ‘s butchers, which has shops in Mintlaw and Stuartfield, had treble success at the 2019 Scottish Craft Butchers Steak Pie, Speciality Meat Pie and Mince Round Evaluation.

They scooped a gold sward for their Steak Rob Roy Pie, silver in Traditional Steak Pie and silver for the Mince Round.

This competition’s heats were held last month at Forth Valley College in Stirling, with more than 280 pies from throughout the country being tested for appearance, flavour, filling and appeal.

The panel of judges included experts, food writers and interested consumers.

Owner Ewan Morrice said: “I’m over the moon and well chuffed with the awards.

“The awards are great publicity with a member of staff posting a picture on Facebook which attracted over 300 likes and thousands of views.

“People are also coming in the butchers to try out our pies, which is great.”

Elsewhere, Kintore butchers J and G Dossett scooped a gold award for their steak pies and a silver for the Mince Round.

J&G Dossett’s Emma Mclean was delighted with the success at the event.

She said: “We were completely delighted about the award.

"We didn’t expect to win the two awards.

“It is great recognition and fully appreciate it especially with all the entries.”

“These type of awards are really important as each member staff contribute to the making of the pies from the butchers cutting the meat to cooks baking them perfectly.

“It’s a good boost for sales and potential new customers as well.”
