Balmedie Beach Wheelchairs are on the lookout for new volunteers as they prepare to reopen for the new season in April.

Co-ordinator for the group Fiona Winstanley is keen to add to her team of 15 volunteers that allows families and carers to hire all-terrain wheelchairs for free to explore the Balmedie Beach together.

She said: “We are really keen on getting more volunteers for Balmedie Beach Wheelchairs.

“At the start, we were looking for people on Sundays but what we found was that larger groups like Inspire need people available midweek which is tough to find.

“We can only agree to provide the service during the week if I can get enough volunteers to come along.

“It is not about the numbers, this is more to do with looking for people available midweek.

“This can be a tough one as you never know how busy we are going to be but it is better to have more

volunteers than we need just in case.

“A month at a time we put out a rota so people can check when they can manage.

Looking ahead to the new season in 2020, she said: “I am hoping that we are going to be a lot busier

this year.

“I am looking forward to the new season.

“We want to make sure nobody is tied up with the role.”

She explained the training involved: “We cover health and safety and have a training booklet.

“We have a training day down at the beach as we have a hoist and wheelchairs.

“We all do the same training so at least we know how it should be used.”
