On Friday Newburgh Primary School pupils carried out speed checks with Formartine Community Policing teams PCs outside the school as part of operation speedwatch.

This comes following the school's concerns about the increase of speeding drivers during lunch time.

Pupils completed questionnaires with the drivers directly related to why they had been stopped for inappropriate speeding.

Sergeant Kevin McDonald was pleased with the engagement shown by the youngsters.

He told the Advertiser: "The kids at all the schools so far have been wonderful in engaging and learning about laser detection equipment.

"They have a list of questions that they ask drivers.

"Some of them are emotion.

"The question how would you feel if you knocked me or my friends over that really touches the heart strings of the drivers."

The operation is partnered with Aberdeenshire Council's Education Department.

He explained why the event was held at lunch time: "The school have found that the biggest concern about speeding was at lunchtime so that's why we held the speed checks at that time.

"We gave out about four warmings to speeding drivers.

"We have more events like this coming up very soon across the Formartine area."
