ABERDEENSHIRE kids had a blast on the final day of the October break as the revamped £250,000 playpark was officially opened.

Council figures – including Provost Bill Howatson – were present at the Country Park ceremony.

Although the facility – which includes a biodiversity-themed pond space, zip wire and large climbing frame – was made available for public use in July, over 100 people turned out to see the ribbon cut.

The upgraded adventure ground was made possible by over £2.1million of Heritage Lottery Funding granted to Aden Park, alongside grants from the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund, Aberdeenshire Council and other organisations, including nearby firm Macduff Shellfish.

It comes as part of a five-year regeneration scheme that will also restore buildings and improve signage.

Speaking at the opening, Central Buchan councillor Norman Smith said: “I’m delighted that we finally have the playpark open for use.

“It took a bit of time with delays due to challenging circumstances such as the weather over winter, but it’s already been a really popular addition to the area for visitors and the local community alike.

“I’m glad it’s been well-maintained and looked after, and I’m sure everyone who is here today will see that and enjoy it.

“I’ve always insisted that Aden Country Park is the jewel in the crown of Buchan, and this is just another diamond to add to it.

“It is a real boost for Buchan.

“This is part of a wider enhancement project for Aden Park which will be carried out in phases, and it’s great we now have the first phase of the initiative complete.”

Adding on, Provost Howatson said: “This project will improve a range of park facilities as well as enhancing park interpretation, accessibility, and a programme to improve biodiversity.

“As you can see, there’s a wide range of play equipment for children for all ages, including a fully-accessible roundabout which ensures children of all abilities can play together.

“It’s important to recognise that these facilities have only been made possible with considerable amount of work by the Aden Project team, and support from the Lottery Heritage Fund along with other organisations.

“Playgrounds provide a focal point for the local community to meet and socialise, but also to provide a safe environment which encourages people to become healthier and more active, and I hope this great facility does this and is enjoyed for many years to come.”
