COASTGUARD and fire crews rushed to the rescue of a trapped dog yesterday (Thursday) evening.

Walkies for Shadow the spaniel along the banks of the River Spey near Mosstodloch took an unexpected turn when a pheasant appeared and he decided to give chase.

Unfortunately, the pursuit ended up down a steep, eroded embankment.

Firefighters from Fochabers fire station and Buckie fire station attended but could not reach Shadow, so rope rescue teams from Buckie and Burghead Coastguard teams were called in to assist.

In terrible weather conditions of driving snow and wind, two Coastguard Rescue Officers went down to Shadow and managed to coax him into an animal rescue bag.

Thankfully, he was recovered to the top of the embankment and back to his owners. The Coastguard are happy to report that he is doing well.

When out in coastal or inland areas near cliffs and embankments the Coastguard encourage owners to keep pets on a lead. Shadows' owners did exactly the right thing when they realised what had happened and called 999 straight away, not putting themselves in danger.

In a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
