WITH schools breaking up for the summer holidays it is the perfect time to explore our beautiful beaches and coast lines.

The Coastguard are urging people to be aware of the dangers that can lurk around the coastline.
The Coastguard are urging people to be aware of the dangers that can lurk around the coastline.

However, HM Coastguard is urging people who are planning their getaway or day out to make sure they are beach ready, too.

Every year the Coastguard is called to around 36,000 incidents across the UK from people being cut off by the tide to getting stuck in the mud.

The Coastguard is currently gearing itself up for a busy summer as many plan to visit the beaches and coastal areas that are so attractive for a day out.

When going to the coast everyone should: Stay away from cliff edges and bases; Check tide times before setting out; Avoid mud; In case of emergency at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Rob Steventon, area commander for HM Coastguard, said: “We want everyone to make these school holidays filled with days to remember, not ones you want to forget.

“We have incredibly attractive coastlines and many of us will all want to go and spend time there.

“While many of us know about the dangers that can be found at the coastline, not all of us are prepared for them. Be prepared – check tide times so you’re not caught out and stay away from cliff edges.

“But if you find yourself in difficulty or you see someone else in difficulty please, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
