The William Blannin launched at approximately 4pm after reports had been received from members of the public ashore of shouts for help heard in the vicinity of the old railway viaduct over the river.

The weather was clear and the wind light, but the darkness nevertheless made the operation challenging.

The Coastguard had already mobilised the Moray Coastguard Rescue Team.

Buckie lifeboat deployed its Y-boat (inflatable daughter craft) to further increase coverage of the search area inshore, with the possibility of entering the river mouth if required.

The Coastguard helicopter Rescue 151 from Inverness was also mobilised and all the assets conducted a detailed search of the area.

After a 90-minute search of the river estuary and nearby Spey Bay, with no reports of persons missing and nothing found, the SAR assets were stood down.

The William Blannin returned to her berth around 6.30pm and was refuelled in preparation for her next service.
