Restored Buckie war memorial unveiled

BUCKIE's newly restored war memorial has been officially unveiled by Moray Council.
The memorial's plaque panels bearing the names of those who fought and died during World Wars I and II, and its crowning bronze figures, a kneeling Royal Navy Reservist in front of a Gordon Highlander, were restored in a project partly-funded by the community.
The Buckie’s Roots charity donated £1000 to the restoration work, with the rest of the costs met by Moray Council.
Buckie's Roots chairwoman Meg Jamieson said: “We were delighted to make this donation.
"It came from funding from the veterans at the Armistice Parade four years ago. They collected money through community donations and a raffle. Buckie’s Roots ring-fenced this funding for the memorial's refurbishment.”
The war memorial was refurbished by Keith-based stonemasonry firm Harper & Allan Masonry. The firm subcontracted Karolina Allan of KK Art & Conservation to do the majority of the work.
Buckie ward councillors Sonya Warren, Neil McLennan and John Stuart, praised the efforts of all involved in the restoration of this highly-respected community landmark.
Councillor Warren said: “It was very important to restore this tribute for the community.
"I thank the contractors and Buckie’s Roots for the valuable contribution they've made towards the costs. This helps to ensure that this memorial is maintained to the high level expected by our residents.”
Councillor McLennan commented: “Buckie war memorial carries the names of families still living within the community and offers an insight into the proud history and sacrifices of the area.
“It’s therefore crucial that the bronze plaque bearing those inscriptions is in excellent condition and that’s why this is such an important unveiling.
"I'm honoured to be here today, all the more so having chaired a number of World War I commemoration events between 2014 and 2018, and having written history publications on those who paid the supreme sacrifice in that horrendous war.
"Lest we forget.”
Councillor Stuart added: “Memorials represent a focal point for remembrance, particularly on occasions such as Remembrance Sunday or anniversaries.
"The sacrifices made by so many for our freedom must be remembered and Buckie war memorial plays a vital role in ensuring that continues.”
Moray Council's Open Spaces Team maintains the memorial along with 44 other war memorials in Moray.
