Offshore industry and cost of living crisis to take centre stage at Buckie meeting
BUCKIE'S future role in the offshore industry and the cost of living crisis are to take centre stage a forthcoming public meeting in Portessie.
Following the screening of a short film entitled Offshore, which examines the past, present and future of the offshore industry. There will then be a public discussion on the cost of living crisis, the Just Transition, and the future of Buckie and other North Sea communities.
Buckie has provided workers for the offshore industry for decades, and will be the hub port for Scotland’s largest wind farm.
Joining members of the public will be a number of invited guests, including local politicians and decision makers.
Behind the meeting are a six-strong group of local people comprising Sophie Legge, Sally Thain, Charlotte Hay, David Blair, Edwin Devlin and Neil Rothnie.
Ms Legge said: "The meeting has stemmed from the cost of living protest we organised and set up around Buckie that included normal, everyday working Buckie folk.
"We hope to achieve a understanding, knowledge and awareness of the offshore businesses and how it is affecting life as we live it in the current climate.
"Hopefully we'll eventually hold our own protest on the cost of living crisis to highlight the struggles and damage that it's causing many people in this country of all ages, back grounds and professions.
"We are inviting local politicians and other decision-makers to hear what the local community has to say, and answer questions we have."
The meeting is due to take place on Thursday, March 16 from 7pm to 9pm at Portessie Public Hall.
