A PROGRAMME aimed at fostering young people's leadership skills has been relaunched.
Run by Active Schools Moray, the Young Leaders Programme seeks to give all participants across Moray opportunities to gain qualifications and volunteering opportunities to grow and develop ready for employment or university
For one former Buckie Community High School student who participated in a previous Young Leader programme the benefits have been very real. Honor Adam is now studying to be a vet, and she attributes a lot of her success to date to her time as a Young Sports Leader.
It was a busy time for her, as she explained.
"I was involved in meetings with the school PE teachers where we discussed the PE department's strengths and weaknesses, and how to improve the department overall to benefit the students and get the more involved in sport.
"We also organised events at the school to encourage the students to be more active.
"I also coached the girls' football team at the school when the coach wasn't there."
The result of all her activities were to produce tangible results which have stood Honor in good stead.
She continued: "This role [Young Sports Leader] benefited me as it allowed me to improve my leadership skills.
"As I had to fit this role in with my education and extra-curricular activities, I became more organised to keep on top of everything. Being a Young Leader increased my confidence when communicating with people both of an older and younger age.
"Being a Young Leader was a great start to expanding my communication skills, which helped me through my university interviews. I'm now finishing my second year at university and I am very grateful to be here."
Honor also had some advice for would-be Young Leaders out there.
"Participate in all extra-curricular activities when you get a chance, such as being a Young Leader or Sports Ambassador!
"Although it's hard work at times it all pays off as it will look great on your CV and it's also really fun.
"If you love sport like me I would definitely recommend this role."
