INSPIRING curiosity in science and sport has been the order of the day at Buckie library of late.

The library played its part in the Moray-wide annual Family Learning Festival which ran across the region recently.

At Buckie library, Active Schools and the council's Adult and Family Learning team joined forces to deliver three fun and free sessions focusing both on science and sport.

Youngsters and their parents had the chance to make towers taller than their competitors, test their engineering skills in Lego car racing, and dabble in science with mini-experiments.

In the first session they watched washing-up gloves 'self-inflate' thanks to a concoction of everyday household ingredients, including vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, and enjoyed a taster badminton lesson once all the experiments were tidied up.

The other two sessions also featured mini-experiment activities followed by sports sessions at Buckie Community High School.

The events were open to all Buckie families who were looking for something different to do on a school night.

Chairwoman of Moray Council’s education, children’s services and leisure committee, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said: “Research suggests that when parents are involved, children do better and achieve more.

"But if you feel unconfident about helping your child with schoolwork you’re certainly not alone. Many parents particularly dread the idea of science, maths. This is recognised by our Adult and Family Learning team.

"These fun, relaxed sessions are aimed at parents and carers who want to come along and relax and enjoy the fun side of these subjects together with their children, and perhaps pick up some pointers on learning activities that they can do at home.”

The Family Learning Festival is a national celebration that takes place in October every year to promote the positive effects of learning together as a family. This year’s theme was to inspire a love of shared learning through curiosity.
