In a letter to parents and carers, headteacher Kim Karam announced that she was stepping down from the post and leaving the teaching profession.

Ms Karam spoke of her "privilege" in having the opportunity to lead the school for five years.

In her letter, she said: "It is with mixed emotions that I write to let you know that I have made the difficult decision to resign from my post as headteacher of Milne’s Primary School.

"After five years, which have included a global pandemic and many changes, I feel it is the right time to pass the baton on. I hope the school can now find a new leader to take it in the direction it needs to go.

"I will step away from teaching knowing that I completed my education career with the best staff team in the most beautiful location alongside kind, creative, curious students. My main hope is that your child has enjoyed their time at primary school, despite all the recent challenges.

"My next opportunity is still unknown but will hopefully allow me to stay in Moray. Please wave or stop for a chat if we cross paths – I’m always happy to hear how the children are doing.

"I thank you for your support over the years and hope you all have a summer filled with joy.

"It has been a privilege to be the headteacher of Milne’s Primary School."

While at the school, Ms Karam also published her debut novel, Tumbling, a Shetland-based story aimed at P7-aged readers. The book drew heavily on her own experiences living on Unst for many years, where her family moved when she was five.
