Resilient Communities Fund cash is up for grabs - but be quick!
Resilient Communities Fund cash is up for grabs - but be quick!

Electricity network operator Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) has set up the £300,000 Resilient Communities Fund for non-profit making organisations, community groups and charities working in their distribution area. Applications up to £20,000 will be accepted until July 31.

The Resilient Communities Fund supports local projects that:

•Protect the welfare of vulnerable customers during a significant power outage or emergency weather event

•Enhance community facilities and services that may be used or instigated in the event of a significant power outage or emergency weather event

•Improve communication during an emergency situation to keep communities informed or aid contact between local groups and response services

A total of £150,000 of funding has been allocated for 2015, with a further £150,000 available for a second round in 2016. An independent panel will decide which projects will receive a grant from the Resilient Communities Fund.

Mo Bates, Stakeholder Engagement Manager at SHEPD, said: “With less than four weeks to go until the deadline, we would encourage communities to submit their applications as soon as possible.

“There’s been a high level of interest in the Fund already so we’re keen to see a good range of submissions with particular emphasis on support for the more vulnerable members of the community.

“It may be summertime now, but it’s always worth thinking ahead and getting ready for the more difficult seasons ahead. Whether it’s installing an alternative cooking source for the village hall, purchasing hand held radios or providing cold-weather kits for elderly residents, making a few sensible preparations can make a big difference in strengthening local community resilience during extreme weather.”
