After years of hard work and determination, the school have achieved the highest level – gold – in UNICEF UK's Rights Respecting School scheme.

One of those delighted to see the school receive the honour was Findochty Primary headteacher Dawn Thomson.

She said: "It's taken two years of hard work by everyone here at the school to achieve the gold from when we were awarded our silver status.

"This has been a long-term commitment over a number of years stretching back to when we started working for our bronze award.

"We're all delighted to have been awarded the gold. The whole school was involved in getting this award.

"We did a lot of work in class about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and what children's rights are under the articles of the convention.

"Due to the Covid restrictions our assessment for the award was done virtually, including interviews with some of the children and a virtual visit to the school by the inspectors."

Inspiration for the Rights Respecting School journey came through an initial focus on children's rights, making sure pupils were aware of their rights and what they should expect.

Founded 70 years ago, UNICEF works to build a better world for every child, across the world. It provides more children with clean water, life-saving food and vaccines, education and protection from violence than any other humanitarian organisation.

The organisation works with families, local communities, organisations and governments in more than 190 countries to help every child realise their full potential with the most vulnerable children and those in greatest need have priority.

UNICEF UK is a British-registered charity that raises funds for UNICEF’s emergency and development work around the world and advocates for lasting change for children worldwide.
