THERE was a fabulous afternoon of fun to be had recently when the Cullen Harbour gala got under way.

There was plenty for all the family to do and while the weather brought a slightly unsummery chill along with wind and rain to begin with, it nevertheless did not put the dampener on the event, which was run by Cullen Sea School.

There was a wide range of activities on offer, including paddleboard and rowing tasters, plus rowing races.

The quayside was packed with stalls showcasing local businesses and community organisations.

Also in attendance at the gala was Buckie's RNLI lifeboat and her volunteer crew – who were welcomed to the harbour by piper Abigail Campbell – the Coastguard and the local retained firefighter team.

Joining Abigail in providing music for the event was Portknockie group The Cool Jam Cats, who were performing over at the sea school.

A barbecue and teas and coffees were also available.

Sea school chairman Prof Ashley Mowat said: "We're all delighted how the gala went.

"It started off quite inauspiciously with wind and rain but they went away and we had a great day.

"There was a big turnout, one of the biggest for some time and we had a good mix of locals and visitors.

"We had the usual good mix of stalls, which were distributed along the quayside and, for the first time, at the sea school which helped space things out a bit. It certainly seemed to work.

"We were delighted to welcome the Buckie lifeboat, Buckie Coastguard and the local firefighters along who always add something extra to the gala.

"The sea school acted as a hub for the food during the gala, with our ever youthful band of ladies serving teas, coffees and homebakes plus the barbecue selling burgers and kippers, which were very popular.

"The Cool Jam Cats were brilliant and attracted an enthusiastic crowd to the sea school.

"I'd like to thank all the stallholders and the local businesses who helped sponsor the gala, our team of three organisers and their enthusiastic helpers and the those who served the teas and coffees and ran the barbecue.

"All round it was one of the best galas we've had for some time with lots of people enjoying themselves."

The gala was sponsored by Moray West Offshore Wind farm.
