A COMMUNITY effort has seen Buckie's Cluny Square become bold splash of colour.

Thanks to a craft bomb effort, hundreds of knitted and crocheted flowers have gone on display in the memorial quadrant of the square on the railings of All Saints Episcopal Church.

Behind the scheme are Buckie's Roots, whose volunteers have breathed new life into the square with floral displays over the last few years.

The group's chairwoman, Meg Jamieson, said: "We're all delighted with the community response to our craft bomb.

"We asked the community to help make a craft bomb as part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful It's Your Neighborhood Award. The response was terrific with people knitting, sewing and crocheting so many items we had to make four panels to accommodate the excellent work being handed in.

"We then brought some of our members together to help come up with ideas and help sew on the many items.

"The panels are up in the square for 28 days and we hope they bring as much joy and pride to the community and visitors as they brought to us when we were putting the display together.

"We're very grateful to Rev Canon Jeremy Paisey for allowing us to do this."

Each panel has its own theme. The Wild and Wonderful depicts the wildflower area for the insects, bees, butterflies and hedghogs, while another represents the town's fishing heritage.

The focus of the third reflects Buckie's vibrant community spirit and the fourth, the Rainbow of Hope and Thanks, pays tribute to all those who worked so hard during the pandemic.

Aside from the floral panels, Buckie's Roots have been busy not only with the displays in Cluny Square but also a new one at the start/terminus of the Speyside Way. Earlier this year the group erected a feature to mark the beginning/end of the 65-mile route, the design being chosen after a public consultation via Facebook.
