IT was time to get the brushes and easels out in Cullen when the town played host to the Big Community Paint Out.

Organised and run by Cullen Art Group, an open invitation was extended to artists both local and from further afield to let their creative juices flow at one of three locations in the town.

The first was between the pet cemetery and the golf club, while those in search of a more elevated view headed up Castle Hill, although the windy weather on the day meant that this option was not taken up.

The final location was at the Auld Kirk, which was to turn out to be the more popular of the two utilised. It was to prove a busy afternoon for art group member Sheila Donn, who is also a guide there. She was more than happy to take a break from her painting to show visitors around the kirk and tell them the history of the building, while also providing a constant supply of refreshments for the artists.

One of those happy with the event was Cullen Art Group chairwoman Myra Craig.

She said: "We're delighted at the turnout all round, we had 23 people come along on the day.

"There were quite a lot of younger people – 15-16 years old and younger – attending, which great to see and there was a good mix of ages.

"Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and it was a lovely, sunny day although a bit windy.

"We were delighted to have Lossiemouth High art teacher Wendy Hay and experienced art group member John Rose offering help and tips, which was very well received by the artists.

"This is the first time we've done something like this and given the response we've had we'll definitely be looking at holding a similar event next year."

Inspiration for the Big Community Paint Out came from a painting session the art group enjoyed at Cullen Sea School. So much fun was had the group thought it would be good to hold a similar event themselves and open it out to the wider community.

Cullen Art Group are also looking forward to the return of their annual exhibition later this month.
