Buckie Shipyard delay causing concern

A NEW lease of life for Buckie Shipyard is being hampered by environmental concerns.

Buckie Harbour Advisory Committee has been told that assessing and dealing with potentially contaminated land on the site is hindering efforts to find new tenants.

Committee chairman, Councillor Gordon McDonald, said: "I know that council officers have been working hard to find a new operator for the yard but there are a number of requirements we have to meet as part of our legal obligations.

"Obviously, we all want to see the yard up and running, creating jobs and contributing to the local economy."

The shipyard site has lain vacant since BSL folded with the loss of 65 jobs in 2013.

The shipyard had been in operation since 1903 and was one of the oldest shipyards in Scotland.

Part of the site has been leased to Macduff Shipyards.
