Work is under way to install a wi-fi system which will see locals and tourists alike connected to the internet for free whilst in the middle of the town.

Behind the scheme are Buckie Area Forum’s Regeneration Group, chaired by Councillor Gordon McDonald.

"Buckie is leading the way here, being one of the first towns in Scotland to benefit from having free town centre wi-Fi access," he said.

"This has been made possible thanks to cash from the Moray Towns Partnership, with just over £11,000 being spent to set up the system and then a further £3,400 per year for running costs for the initial three years of the scheme.

"It’s a groundbreaking project which is being closely watched by our partnership colleagues in Keith, Lossiemouth and Forres, who are interested in installing town centre wi-fi in their own communities."

BAF chair Sonya Warren added: "One of the forum’s major strengths has always been our grassroots base and connection to the community. The internet is so important these days in helping people make choices about their holidays, so by making this easier and free to access it makes Buckie and more attractive place to visit."

Work is currently under way to put the wi-fi in place, which will be followed by a period of testing before it is officially launched.
