A group of 18 teachers have signed up for a series of informal lessons in British Sign Language (BSL), used to communicate with people who are deaf.

Leading the sessions was Moray Council teacher of the deaf Paul Duncan.

Although not a BSL tutor, Mr Duncan has nevertheless volunteered his time to pass on some of his knowledge of the language to staff. The school has three deaf students, who are supported in class by signers.

Mr Duncan: "We’re doing three sessions initially and, depending on interest after that, we’ll look at holding further sessions. "

"At present there aren’t any other schools in Moray who have signing needs like this and hopefully by the end of the sessions the staff will be able to hold basic, every day conversations and social interactions with the students, including asking how they are, and so on."
