William Mair Funeral Directors, based on the town's Newlands Lane, has unveiled Letters to Heaven, which allows grieving relatives and friends to write letters to those they have lost.

Katrina Adams, business leader at William Mair, said: "The idea is help to bring peace to those who have lost loved ones.

"How many times have we wanted to talk to a deceased relative or friend but didn't have the means? It's nice to be able to write to them personally.

"Anniversaries or special times of the year, for example, may make people feel they want to write to a loved one.

"Letters can be posted in the special letter box we have here in the garden of the funeral home. These will then be securely and confidentially stored forever or until a family decide they would like them returned.

"At the end of the day, if it can bring peace to even just one person, it'll have been worthwhile."

Ms Adams said she believes Letters to Heaven might well be the first scheme of its kind in Scotland.

She continued: "I originally got the idea from down south when I spotted it on social media.

"I thought it would be a really good thing to do here.

"We've just finished redecorating the inside of the funeral home and after that was done Letters to Heaven was a feature I wanted to introduce."

She added that although only very recently put in place the scheme had drawn a hugely favourable response on the firm's Facebook page, with letters already having been posted in the box.
