With many events to celebrate bonfire night also taking place on Saturday, Councillor Neil McLennan urged people to attend organised events rather than try and hold their own.

He said: “Every year we read dreadful stories of people injured, maimed and even killed by misuse of fireworks or accidents around bonfires.

"It is vital you follow safety advice to make sure it is not you. The last thing we want is communities harmed and grieving over injuries or loss because of avoidable accidents.

"I would urge people to attend organised bonfire and firework events. Please also follow the advice of officials, police and the fire service.

"I commend and thank all our emergency services at this time of year. They have to deal with enhanced calls outs, often for issues which do not need to happen.

"Personally I would ban firework sales. I know various motions have appeared at various councils before like this. Normally I am for personal freedoms but on something like this, where fireworks cause such harm to communities annually and that risk can be mitigated very easily, I would like to see legislation passed.

"For now, we only have our individual freedoms and nous, and we need to make sure everyone is using it this year.”
