RENEWABLES, sustainability and green jobs were at the heart of a Renewables Fayre held at Buckie Community High School (BCHS) recently.

Senior students were invited along to chat to a total of 14 employers and other organisations about their work in the fields of renewables and sustainability and the many potential career paths which are available once they leave school.

Taking place in the school hall on Monday, June 19 the fayre ran from 10.30am to 3pm. It was organised as a joint venture between BCHS and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Moray.

BCHS depute rector Liz Bain said the event had been very well received by the students who attended.

She continued: "The fayre went really well.

"It is the first event like this for us since Covid measures and so we were wondering how the young people would cope, but they relished the opportunity to talk to the business, college and university representatives.

"They asked lots of insightful questions and the employers I spoke to were delighted with the level of engagement. We are very grateful to Samira, our school DYW co-ordinator. who has the time to follow up employer connections and organise them to visit us in school. Our Skills Development Scotland advisers were also on hand to encourage the pupils.

"Young folks from new S3-6 visited and collected stickers from each stand. Those with the most have been entered in a draw and there is a prize. This seemed to spur many of them on to visit all the stands enthusiastically.

"Some pupils came back in lunchtime as they were so interested and had run out of time in the class time allocated. We had a group of pupils from Keith Grammar who are interested in careers in sustainable energy visit also.

"There was a definite buzz in the hall and it was great to see our young folk represent themselves and their school so positively."

The employers and organisations represented at the fayre were: Johnston's of Elgin; Scottish Maritime Academy; REAP Scotland; RGU; UHI Moray Science Department; UHI Moray Just Transition Team; RAF Lossiemouth; AES Solar; Moray Council Climate Strategy Team; Gaeltel Ltd; Chivas Brothers; Currie Contractors; ACE Winches; Vattenfall.
