THE school may be in lockdown but before the doors closed the hard work and dedication of cycle enthusiasts at Buckie Community High School has seen them honoured by Cycle Scotland.

Cycling was first brought onto the curriculum one and a half years ago by PE teacher Stefan Wojcik and since then interest in the activity has burgeoned.

The joint efforts of staff and students have now seen the school officially declared as Cycling Friendly, a nationally recognised award which recognises the students, teachers and volunteers around Scotland committed to increasing cycling in schools. It is aimed at encouraging and supporting schools across Scotland to take a leading role in ensuring that any pupil, anywhere can enjoy the benefits of cycling.

Mr Wojcik said: "I'm absolutely delighted with this, it's brilliant news.

"It's one and a half years since cycling was introduced in the school and it's grown really quickly.

"Cycling is part of the core curriculum in the school now and has come on leaps and bounds.

"We want to provide opportunities for people to have access to bikes go on runs in the local area. There's been coaching and looking at things like bike safety and road safety. We've also had a bike doctor session thanks to Outfit Moray.

"The S3s had a cycle challenge day and a roadshow with the P7s from schools in the area."

The school currently has 11 bikes for student use and Mr Wojcik praised the financial support cycling has received.

"The PTFA have funded us to buy stands for bike maintenance and we're very grateful to them for their generosity," he said.

Mr Wojcik added that the school were looking to step up promotion of active travel to school by students, whether that be by bike, on foot or scooter.

The award is not the first time Cycle Scotland have come up trumps for Buckie High. Late in 2018 Mr Wojcik secured funding from the organisation to buy a total of 10 bikes.

The funding for the grants was supplied by Transport Scotland.
