BUCKIE Ladies FC's historic achievement in claiming the Highlands and Islands League Cup has seen them hailed at Holyrood.
Sunday, July 3 will be a day which will remain forever etched into the annals of the club when they won their first ever trophy at Nairn's Station Park. A nerve-racking penalty shootout saw them lift the trophy, vanquishing the holders Sutherland Women after normal and extra time finished 2-2.
The fantastic achievement of Buckie Ladies in clinching their first ever silverware earlier this month, the Highlands and Islands League Cup, is to be recognised by the Scottish Parliament.
To mark the achievement, as well as the invaluable development work with girls football undertaken by the club, Banffshire and Buchan Coast MSP Karen Adam is putting forward a motion calling on the Scottish Parliament to congratulate them.
She said: “The club has been hugely active in promoting women’s football for all age groups, in youth coaching and in creating a pathway for local girls into competitive football.
"Everyone associated with Buckie Ladies has a great deal to be proud of.
“What they’re doing is brilliant for mental and physical health, in breaking down gender stereotypes and in building confidence. I am delighted that all their hard work – and the team’s performance on cup final day – brought a much merited reward. Best of luck to them.”
Buckie Ladies manager Mel Smith said the motion had come as something of a bolt from the blue.
She continued: "It's just amazing, it was a total shock.
"To get the club acknowledged and recognised in parliament is amazing.
"I'm chuffed that all the volunteers at the club have been recognised in Karen's motion, both on the first team and development side of things. Everything they do is for the love of the game and to do the best for the girls, they don't do it for thanks and praise, which makes this motion so special.
"We've been plugging away for years to get to this stage, it's involved a lot of commitment from a lot of people – the whole club deserve this and we're all very grateful to Karen for doing this."
Ms Adam's motion notes that in spite of being formed just five years ago, the club had not only won their first ever trophy but had also been "hugely active" in the local area promoting women's football at all age groups.
In addition to broadening the reach of the game, the club was "breaking down gender stereotypes, building community spirit and improving mental and physical health".
