Karen Adam, the MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, has praised individuals, businesses and community groups’ for pulling together and supporting people in need as the storms left thousands of homes across the north-east without power.

The MSP and her team have themselves drawn congratulations for their response and support, offering round the clock support to people without electricity, food and water throughout the crisis.

Ms Adam said: “After an incredibly tough week for so many in the north-east, I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the people and organisations who came to the fore and helped during Storm Arwen.

"Working collaboratively and pulling together in the fashion we did may have quite literally saved lives.

“During the storm, my team and I worked with countless individuals, local businesses, and across local authorities to get residents in need the immediate help they required. This vital work provided important warmth and shelter, food and water, washing facilities, and charging points for phones and lifesaving medical equipment.

“To name but a few, the local heroes that my office team and I were working with, the local business owners, volunteers and staff behind organisations such as Knowes Hotel and Restaurant, Fife Lodge Hotel, Boddam Chip Shop, One Pot Stop Food Bar, Little Kitchen Outside Catering, The Grill, Salvation Army, the Boyndie Visitor Centre, Portsoy Coffee Shop and Bistro, The Galley, Seafield Arms in Whitehills, and catering vans across Banffshire and Buchan Coast were providing food to people without.

“AP Systems in Cullen offered their premises to the public, Clean Banffshire Ltd offered free facilities for people to wash and tumble dry their clothes, and council leisure and community centres opened up across the region to provide much needed charging points, warmth and washing facilities.

"What we witnessed was nothing short of incredible under unprecedented circumstances. I am reassured there is much needed work under way to ensure preparation for any future crisis similar to what happened during Storm Arwen and Storm Barra.

“So again, I want to say a massive thank you to every single person who helped in any way at all, no contribution during this time was small. My office team and I continue to be on hand to provide support to people still in need, so please contact my office if I can be of any help at all.”
