TURRIFF’S local authority caravan site could be taken over by a new community group.

The Station Road park is one of 11 caravan sites of which Aberdeenshire Council wants to dispose.

The town’s community council and Turriff and District Ltd have shown interest in taking it over.

Community council treasurer John Smith said: "The likely outcome is that the community council and Turriff and District Ltd will set up a community trust-type of group to bid for the site.

"Some of us went to look at the site at Inverbervie where a local group has turned it around in five years, so it can be done.

"I believe a group running the site should also share any profits

made at the site among local causes."

The council wants rid of the caravan sites to save money, as their total deficit in 2009-10 was £64,000.

It has stated that it would prefer community groups to take them over, but if no interest is shown it would lease the sites to commercial operators or sell them.

The plans for the Turriff caravan park were discussed at a public meeting.

Community groups have also shown interest in taking over caravan parks in Banff and Portsoy.

Banff and Macduff Community Trust has expressed interest in taking over the town’s links site, while the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival group is in talks with the council about the Portsoy caravan park.
