GRAMPIAN Police has launched its latest recruitment drive for a new intake of police cadets.

The cadetship will run for a year from August and cadets will gain experience of working with a number of departments within Grampian Police.

They will also experience placements with other agencies such as Buchan Dial-A-Bus, Cornerstone Community Care and the North East Sensory Service.

Those with a birthday between May 1, 1995 and November 1, 1995 are eligible to apply and should contact Grampian Police recruitment unit on 01224 306683/4 or 01224 306663 during office hours to request an application form and book a candidate briefing session.

A police spokesman said: "Applicants must be physically and medically fit and highly-motivated team players with the determination to succeed.

"Depending on successful completion of the cadet programme, and subject to additional selection criteria, cadets may be able to apply to become a police officer when they reach 18 years old."

Chief Inspector Richard Craig said: "Becoming a cadet is an extremely rewarding path for young people to take. Through a cadetship, young people can really develop their skills for entering the working world - whether it be as a police constable, or in another career path.

"The selection process is challenging with successful candidates having to obtain a pass in the Police Standard Entrance Test, a fitness test, an assessment day and undertake a medical. We hope this helps to ensure that successful candidates have the initial skills which we can then nurture and develop.

"We would urge anyone who is eligible and interested to give us a call and sign up to one of our candidate briefing sessions."

Cadet Craig Barron, 17, said: "The cadetship has allowed me to improve in many areas including my confidence, attention to detail and fitness to name but a few.

"Throughout my cadetship I have been working in many different departments ranging from working with the public in front office to being in court seeing how a trial works. All these areas are useful experience for progressing as a police constable or leaving to find work in a career you are interested in."

Cadet Ainsley Walker, 17, said: "My experience of the cadetship has been very beneficial to any path I decide to take in the future. You’ll find that you learn and develop a lot of skills in all aspects of the job whether it’s your communication, dedication or just respecting others.

"The cadets are definitely something I would recommend to anyone who wants an insight into the police as it makes you more confident, responsible, independent and disciplined as a person."

Candidate briefing sessions will be held at the following times and locations: March 1 - Banchory, March 2 - Aberdeen, March 5 - Peterhead, March 6 - Fochabers, March 7 - Aberdeen, March 8 - Stonehaven, March 12 - Hunty.

Individuals who are considering applying are strongly recommended to attend one of these prior to submitting an application form. These will be in the evenings and last approximately 90 minutes. Places must be booked in advance.

The deadline for applications is Monday, March 26, and competition for places is expected to be keen.
