A public consultation on the future of Canal Park in Banff is to take place next year.

Aberdeenshire Council have this morning disclosed that a preferred purchaser for the land has been identified.

The land at Canal Park and the neighbouring Old Market Place was earmarked for potential retail use last year before being put up for sale by the local authority.

A large portion of the site is labelled as 'common good land', and in line to council procedure this would require a community consultation to invite the public to submit their views towards the plans.

Site investigations are due to take place next week, with engineers being called in to take soil samples.

Banff & Buchan Area Manager Angela Keith said: “It’s important to stress that the upcoming site investigations are not the start of any building works on site.

“We need to gather the public’s views on the potential sale of the land before any final decisions are made, and we will be sharing information on how people can get involved at the start of the year.”

Canal Park was home to Deveronside Juniors Football Club and is still in use by local amateur sides, however all users have been informed of the movements and alternative venues for hosting football matches have been identified.
