Shirley-Ann Mason (45), an intelligence analyst, has been promoted to warrant officer, the pinnacle of the non-commissioned ranks.

It is a post Ms Mason has aspired to reach since joining the RAF in 1985 and is looking forward to taking on the new challenge.

“This is what I’ve worked for and it feels great to finally have achieved it,” she told the Banffshire Journal.

“It also shows how women are increasingly making their mark on what was traditionally a male-dominated career. I have become the first woman to reach the warrant officer rank in my field. I was told in my first couple of years in the RAF by my superiors that I could well be the first woman to reach the rank and since then it has been my goal."
