A TOTAL of £450,000 worth of work to protect Banff Bridge from erosion –
and which will see traffic reduced to one lane for many weeks – has been approved by councillors.
The A-listed structure, seriously damaged by floodwater in November, 2009, saw extensive work carried out on it last November and December to reinstate the bed around the bridge to pre-flood damage levels.
Now, following approval by Banff and Buchan area committee councillors last week, a second phase of work will begin next month to install sediment control measures.
It is expected to take 10 weeks to complete.
According to a report before councillors, a second element of the work, taking a further 12 weeks, will begin next May to construct new masonry cutwaters on the upstream face of each of the bridge’s six piers, thereby reinstating a feature lost when the bridge was widened in 1881.
