WOMEN in Portsoy and Aberchirder are being told that they could play a vital

role in ensuring a quick fire service response to an emergency in their areas.

Fire stations in both places are now short of ‘on-call’ paid part-time firefighters, and cannot always muster a crew.

That can mean delays in responding to serious incidents, with appliances and crews having to attend from further afield.

However, Station Manager Denis Beedie feels that more women could easily plug the gap.

He told ‘The Banffshire Journal’: “We are keen to hear from men and women who live and work in Portsoy or Aberchirder and are interested in becoming retained firefighters.

“There are a lot of misconceptions among women about their suitability, but it is definitely not just a man’s job, and no one lifts anyone over their shoulders. While I did it in training, I haven’t in 28 years in the job.
