WITH older people’s day on the horizon (Saturday, October 1) Active Aberdeenshire is encouraging elderly people to sign up and get discounts on access to council leisure facilities across the area.

The theme for Older People’s Day this year is all about encouraging older people to be more active which brings benefits socially, mentally and physically.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee Councillor Richard Stroud said: “Active Aberdeenshire provides real value for money for people aged over 60 and I encourage people to sign up and take advantage of the leisure facilities across Aberdeenshire to live a more active lifestyle.”

Sports Development Officer Rachel Boal is encouraging older people to find out what is on at their local leisure facilities and said: “It is very simple to sign up for a membership. You can use your National Entitlement card issued for free bus travel to link to our system and it means members can then simply swipe their card to gain admission.”

Individual concession memberships are £10 a month for unlimited access to any Aberdeenshire Council Leisure facility or class and only £15 a month for two people at the same address.

The membership includes all swimming sessions as well as adult swimming lessons, fitness gym use with induction included, wet and dry exercise classes and hire of courts for badminton, squash or short tennis.

The membership scheme is popular with customers who have already been using facilities and is also attracting people new to regular exercise.

Aberdeenshire Council aims to get more people exercising through the membership package, which runs from month to month so requires no long term commitment allowing for periods of ill health or holidays.

More information the membership scheme can be found at www. Aberdeenshire.gov.uk/activeaberdeenshire or by phoning your local leisure facility.
