A YOUNG man who drove around Portsoy while over the legal limit of alcohol and uninsured has been banned for three years.

Owen Donald (21), of 68 Land Street, Keith was also fined £450 at Banff Sheriff Court when he pleaded guilty to committing the offences on February 19 of this year.

The court heard that Donald was at a party in Portsoy when he and a friend decided to take another friend’s car "for a spin".

However, on a back road near the town he struck a grass verge and the car ended up in a field on its side.

A defence agent for Donald said that after the crash Donald walked back to the party and continued to consume alcohol.

The lawyer added that the accused had a previous drink driving conviction, and that the incident had put considerable strain on Donald’s relationship with his father, for whom he worked as a joiner.

Sheriff Peter Hammond told Donald: "You of all people should have known better the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol."
