POLICE are appealing for information after around 1,000 straw bales worth a five-figure sum of money were destroyed in a fire near Cuminestown.

The blaze, believed to be suspicious, happened at around 3.30am on Tuesday at a farm near the unclassified Cuminestown to Fyvie road.

By the time Grampian Police and Grampian Fire and Rescue arrived, the bales were well alight.

Constable Blake Summers of the local policing team based at Turriff, who is leading the enquiry, said: "We are treating the blaze as having been started deliberately.

"Given the relatively remote location, it is suspected that the person resonsible must have had some form of transport.

"I would ask that anyone who may have seen a person or vehicle acting suspiciously in the area of the Cuminestown to Fyvie road to make contact with the police."

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5 700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.
