GRAMPIAN Police are warning people to be vigilant following a bank card scam where fraudsters have targeted elderly people.

Conmen have been phoning elderly or vulnerable people pretending to be from their bank and giving them limited personal information such as their address to make the call seem genuine.

A police spokesman added: "Often they go on to claim that their bank card has been used fraudulently, ask for the card’s PIN number so the new card can be set up with it and then say a new card will be dispatched by courier.

"The old card is then picked up by a man posing as a courier. Following this, large sums of money are withdrawn from the victim’s bank account, using both the card and PIN number obtained by the conmen.

"Callers have also claimed to be police officers advising there has been fraud on their account. Police or bank staff will never contact members of the public and request any bank details."

Any suspicious calls can be reported to Grampian Police on 0845 5006700 or information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
