POLICE uncovered heroin and crack cocaine when they raided properties in Macduff as part of an increased clampdown on drugs in the area.

Officers stormed the homes as part of Operation Hotspur after the addresses had been the focus of close investigation.

The raids also saw properties in Banff, Fraserburgh and Peterhead targeted in the swoop with about £16,000 worth of drugs seized.

The operation was carried out with Grampian Police’s partner agencies Turning Point (Scotland), Aberdeenshire Substance Misuse Service and Aberdeenshire Council.

Detective Constable Kevin MacDonald said: "The latest phase of Operation Hotspur demonstrates how determined we are to making Aberdeenshire a safer place for everyone.

"No one agency can do this alone and working with our partners is a much better option if we wish to break the cycle of offending associated with drug misuse."

Other drugs that were seized during the operation included cannabis, Diazepam and Mcat (mephedrone).

Officers on raids were able to offer people the chance to make voluntary contact with substance misuse workers, with eight people taking up the opportunity.

DC MacDonald said: "Although drugs raids form an important element of the operation, it is also extremely vital that we offer support and advice to people who want to break free of drug addiction and create a better life for themselves.

"It is encouraging that a number of people took up our offer of receiving additional support.

"We are committed to working together to make sure our area remains one of the safest in the country. Operation Hotspur is a clear illustration of how we can share expertise and resources to achieve our common purpose across the area and keep us to the fore nationally.

"With the overwhelming support of local people, we are able to carry out this vital work to make our communities a safer place to live and work."

Anyone with information relating to drugs or any other crime in their area can contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5 700 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
