The accolade is organised by Turriff And District Rotary Club to recognise the outstanding contribution of an individual to the local community, either through youth organisations, charity groups, sport-related clubs or some other community focused project.

The club is now urging people to put pen to paper to nominate their local hero for the 2019 award.

The competition began in 1978 and has seen a citizen from Turriff or the surrounding area recognised each year for his or her work in the community, and last year saw the award shared between two people – pipe band stalwarts Bill and Jackie Hepburn – for the first time in its history.

The Rotary organising committee are hoping for another bumper year of entries and to make it easy for the public to get involved in making a nomination they will be placing the nomination forms in accessible places throughout the town.

Anybody is welcome to pick up a form and fill in the details of who they would like to nominate for the accolade alongside their reasons for doing so.

Nominees will be discussed by the selection committee and the winner selected on merit, not the amount of nominations.

Historical recipients of the accolade included the last provost of the town James Dawson and James Scott for his work with the Legion.

More recently, recipients have included fundraiser Mary Macfarlane, mobile postmaster Moira Raeburn, community stalwart Allan Stephen, silver band conductor and Boys' Brigade leader Frank Cranna, Relay For Life organiser Lynne Cruickshank and pianist Margaret Duncan.

Nominations should be sent to Robert Pirie (address on nomination form) no later Friday November 8.

The citizen of the year will be announced before Christmas.
