INVERURIE-based bowler Colin Banks almost created shockwaves in pulling off an almighty upset in the first round of the World Indoor Bowls Championships on Monday night.

Against last year's runner-up, Nottinghamshire's Simon Skelton, Colin took the first set 7-4, but went down 5-9 after a hard-fought second set.

And Skelton proved too strong in the extra end of the Open Singles affair with Banks losing two shots.

It was the first time Banks had appeared in the tournament and he later commented: "I felt good and was disappointed not to get over the line, but I gave it my best shot."
