Elgin City women’s football team notch up double figures in SWFL North league opener against Buchan Ladies as Darcy Matheson and Mia Lundberg score hat-tricks
Elgin City’s women’s football team notched up double figures in their opening league match of the season.
City welcomed Buchan Ladies to the Gleaner Arena for their first SWFL North league match on Sunday, and couldn’t have hoped for a better start.
Hat-tricks by Darcy Matheson and Mia Lundberg helped the Black and Whites to an 11-2 victory.
A devastating eight-goal display in the first half proved too much for the visitors.
Lily Morrison opened the scoring on eight minutes before Lundberg and Lyndsey Brown quickly added two more.
Four goals in a four-minute spell from Matheson, Lundberg, Ellie Main and Alexa Mann took the score to 7-0, and Matheson added her own second on the stroke of half time.
Both Matheson and Lundberg completed their trebles by the 53rd minute to take the home tally into double digits.
Lauren Doherty came on as sub and within five minutes she added her name to the scoresheet to make it 11-0 on the hour.
City took their foot off the gas after a succession of changes to their team, allowing Buchan to keep battling away and to their credit they scored twice.
This Sunday Elgin face St Anthony’s for the second time this season, having beaten the Glasgow side 7-2 in the Scottish Cup first round.
The teams meet at the Gleaner Arena in the preliminary round of the SWFL League Cup.
